Custom Flags & Banners: Artwork Specification Guide

Welcome to our comprehensive guide for preparing artwork for custom flags and banners. Submitting the correct file ensures vibrant, sharp results and a smooth production process. This document outlines all necessary technical specifications.

Accepted File Formats

For optimal print quality, we accept the following vector and high-resolution raster formats. Vector files are strongly preferred as they scale without loss of quality.

  • PDF (Portable Document Format) Preferred. Ensure all fonts are embedded.

  • EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) A reliable vector format.

  • AI (Adobe Illustrator) Native format. Please outline fonts.

  • TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) High-resolution, lossless. Acceptable for raster images.

  • JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) Minimum 300 DPI.

Critical Font Guidelines

Missing fonts are a primary cause of production errors. To guarantee your text prints correctly, please follow these rules:

  • Outline All Fonts: Convert all text to outlines (paths) before saving your file. This eliminates the need for us to have the original font files.

  • How to Outline: In Adobe Illustrator, select all text and choose Type > Create Outlines. In other software, look for a "Convert Text to Paths" or "Convert to Shapes" option.

  • For PDFs: If outlining is not possible, embed all fonts. Go to File > Save As > PDF > Marks and Bleeds > Check "Embed Page Fonts".

Resolution & Color Requirements

Accurate color and sufficient resolution are essential for professional-looking banners and flags.

  • Minimum Resolution: All raster images must be at least 150 DPI at final printed size. For text-heavy or high-detail designs, 300 DPI is recommended.

  • Color Mode: All files must be in CMYK color mode (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black). RGB files will be converted, which can cause color shifts. Please design in CMYK from the start.

  • Color Proofing: Colors on screen may differ from print. Request a physical proof for critical color matching.

File Size & Naming Conventions

Proper file management ensures smooth handling of your order. Adhere to these simple rules:

  • File Size Limit: Files up to 500 MB can be uploaded directly. Larger files can be shared via a link (e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive).

  • Naming Convention: Use a clear, descriptive file name with no special characters. Example: CompanyName_Banner_3x5ft_v2.pdf (Not: final_FINAL_artwork(3).pdf).

Double-Sided Artwork

For double-sided flags, we offer two primary methods. Choose the one that best suits your use case.

Method

Description

Best For

Mirrored (Single Sided Printed Show Through)

One side is printed at high opacity. The design is visible from the reverse with adequate light. The image appears reversed on the back.

Lightweight flags, budget-friendly options, indoor use.

Dual/Duplex Printed

Both sides are printed independently, requiring two separate artwork files. The design on each side can be completely different. Results in a crisp, opaque, and professional appearance.

High-quality flags, outdoor use, priority on perfect readability.

Flag Shapes & Sizes

We offer a variety of standard shapes. Your artwork should be designed to match the exact proportions of the selected shape.

Material Specifications: 130gr Knitted Polyester

Our standard material is high-quality 130 grams per square meter knitted polyester. This fabric is chosen for its balance of durability, color vibrancy, and drape.

  • Weight: 130gsm (grams per square meter) provides a substantial feel without being too heavy.

  • Material: 100% Polyester. Excellent for dye-sublimation printing.

  • Benefits: Fade-resistant, lightweight, quick-drying, and holds color exceptionally well. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Printing Methods: Single vs. Duplex/Dual Spray

Understanding the printing methods helps you choose the right option for your project.

  • Single-Sided Printing: The design is printed onto one side of the fabric. Ink saturates the material, so some design will be visible on the reverse side, though it will appear lighter and reversed. This is a more economical choice for banners mounted against walls or for single-sided displays.

  • Duplex/Dual Spray Printing: A specialized technique where each side of the fabric is printed independently. This ensures that both sides have full color saturation and can feature different designs. The result is a high-opacity, professional look where text is readable from both sides. This is mandatory for free-hanging flags with visible text on both sides.

At Flags and Signs, custom flag prices vary by type and size, with frequent sales offering significant discounts:

Swooper/Feather Flags (15ft tall)

Most custom single-sided swooper flags (also called feather or flutter flags) are regularly priced at $39.00 but are frequently on sale for $25.00 (a 36% saving).  These are full-sleeve, windless flags suitable for outdoor business promotion.

Double-Sided Custom Swooper Flags

Double-sided custom swooper flags are priced higher, typically around $99.00, with sale prices often around $59.00 to $89.00 depending on the current promotion.

Teardrop Flag Kits

Teardrop flag kits, which include the flag, fiberglass pole, and spike (usually 11ft tall), are generally priced at $99.00.

Smaller or Standard Stock Flags

Smaller stock flags or specific pre-designed options (like 3x5ft banners or certain real estate flags) can be found for as low as $6.00 to $25.00, especially during clearance or special sales.

Bulk Discounts

The site often offers bulk pricing; for example, buying 3 or more specific flags may reduce the unit price to around $21.00.  Coupon codes are also available for larger orders (e.g., $10 off $100, $20 off $200).

At Flags and Signs, the turnaround time for custom flags depends on the production schedule and shipping method selected, though specific daily production guarantees are not explicitly listed on their main FAQ like some larger competitors.

Production and Processing

Custom orders generally require a processing period for artwork approval and printing before shipping. Based on industry standards for similar custom digital print shops and the site's "fast" shipping claims, customers should typically expect a production turnaround of 2 to 5 business days after artwork approval.  The site notes that orders cannot be cancelled or artwork changed once processing has begun.

Shipping Times

Once produced, flags are shipped via carriers like UPS, FedEx, or USPS.

  • Standard Ground: Typically takes 3 to 7 business days depending on the destination from their Jacksonville, FL location.

  • Expedited Options: Faster shipping methods are likely available at checkout for urgent orders, potentially reducing transit time to 2-3 days.

Artwork Approval Factor

The total time to receive your flag also depends on how quickly you approve the digital proof. The clock for production usually starts after the customer approves the design proof and payment is cleared.  Delays in checking email or requesting multiple design revisions will extend the total delivery time.

Specific dollar amounts for expedited shipping at Flags and Signs are not published as a flat rate on their website.  Instead, the cost is calculated dynamically at checkout based on:

  • Package Weight & Dimensions: Larger flags (like 15ft swoopers) and hardware kits weigh more, increasing the carrier rate.

  • Destination: Shipping from their Jacksonville, FL facility costs more for cross-country destinations (e.g., California) than for nearby states.

  • Carrier Service Level: You will typically see options for UPS 2nd Day Air or UPS Next Day Air, with prices reflecting the carrier's current commercial rates for the specific package.

To see the exact cost, you must add the custom flag to your cart and proceed to the shipping calculation step. For urgent orders, customers are often advised to contact customer service directly before ordering to confirm if a specific delivery date can be met, as production time (2–5 days) is separate from shipping transit time.

Based on the search results, flagsandsigns.com does not explicitly state a fixed production lead time on their public policy pages, unlike some larger competitors who guarantee 1-2 day production.

However, based on their product descriptions emphasizing "fast" service and industry standards for similar custom digital print shops in Jacksonville, FL:

  • Estimated Production Time: You should typically expect a production lead time of 2 to 5 business days after your artwork is approved.  This timeframe accounts for the digital printing and finishing of custom swooper, feather, and teardrop flags.

  • Artwork Approval: The production clock starts only after you approve the digital proof.  Delays in reviewing or revising the proof will extend the total time before shipping.

  • Shipping Separation: Once production is complete, the flag is handed to the carrier (UPS, FedEx, or USPS). Shipping time is separate and depends on the service level selected (e.g., Ground, 2-Day, Overnight).

For the most accurate and current lead time, especially for urgent orders, it is recommended to contact their customer service directly or check the estimated delivery date provided in the shopping cart during checkout, as this calculation often includes real-time production schedules.

Shipping Carriers and Options

The site utilizes major carriers including UPS, FedEx, and USPS.  During checkout, you will typically be presented with the following service levels:

  • Ground Shipping: The standard economy option, with transit times generally ranging from 3 to 7 business days depending on your distance from Florida.

  • Expedited Services: Options such as UPS 2nd Day Air and UPS Next Day Air (or equivalent FedEx services) are available for urgent orders. The cost for these services varies significantly based on the package size and destination.

Free Shipping Policy

Unlike some larger competitors that offer free shipping on orders over a specific threshold (e.g., $85 or $150), Flags and Signs does not explicitly advertise a free shipping threshold on their main policy pages.  Shipping charges appear to apply to all orders regardless of the subtotal, though specific promotions may occasionally alter this.

International and Special Shipping

  • International: The website states that international shipping is not available through their automated web checkout.  Customers wishing to ship outside the contiguous United States must contact the company directly via their "Contact Us" page to discuss options and pricing.

  • Large Items: While specific freight policies for extra-large flagpoles are not detailed, standard ground shipping covers most flag and banner kits.

To determine the exact cost for your order, you must add items to your cart and proceed to the checkout page where the real-time calculator will display the precise rates for each available shipping method.

Flags and Signs does not explicitly publish a detailed return shipping cost policy on their public-facing pages. However, based on standard industry practices for custom flag retailers and the information available:

  • Customer Responsibility: For returns due to customer error (e.g., ordering the wrong design or changing your mind), the customer is typically responsible for paying the return shipping costs.  Original outbound shipping fees are generally non-refundable.

  • Company Error: If the return is due to a defect, damage, or an error made by Flags and Signs (e.g., wrong item shipped), the company usually covers the return shipping cost, often by providing a prepaid return label or reimbursing the cost upon receipt.

  • Custom Items: Please note that custom-made flags (with specific logos or text) are often non-returnable unless they are defective, as they cannot be resold.

To confirm the specific policy for your order and avoid unexpected charges, it is strongly recommended to contact their customer service directly before initiating a return.  They can provide the exact procedure and clarify who bears the shipping cost for your specific situation.

Based on the available information, flagsandsigns.com does not explicitly publish a specific return time limit (e.g., "30 days") on their public policy pages.

However, adhering to standard industry practices for custom flag retailers and similar signage companies:

  • Stock Items: Returns are typically accepted within 30 days of delivery, provided the items are unused and in original packaging.

  • Custom Flags: Custom-made flags (with specific logos, text, or sizes) are generally non-returnable unless they are defective or there was an error in production.

  • Defective/Damaged Items: Issues regarding damage or defects must usually be reported within 2 to 5 business days of receipt to qualify for a replacement or refund.

To avoid missing a potential deadline, it is critical to contact their customer service immediately upon receiving your order if you intend to make a return.  They can confirm the specific window applicable to your purchase and issue a Return Authorization (RA) number if required.
